4 Reasons to Start Spring Cleaning with Your HVAC System

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and spring is blossoming all around NW Metro Atlanta. As we herald in a new season, it’s a good reminder to clear winter debris, dust the corners of your home, and begin clearing out the remains of the old winter season to make room for the fresh air and sunshine. Don’t overlook your Air Conditioning and Heating systems, its imperative to the health and wellness of your home to perform regular HVAC maintenance.

Here are some ways you can prepare your HVAC system to function properly this spring:

Changing Air Filters
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends changing your air filter once every three months. Clean filters improve the air quality of your home and are an essential part of HVAC maintenance. There are varying degrees of air filter quality, so be sure to check your air filter for the manufacturer’s recommended date of replacement. Fiberglass filters need to be replaced every month, whereas HEPA filters can last up to 6 months and can be cleaned with a vacuum nozzle. Spring is the perfect time for residents in the Atlanta area to check and replace the filters of their heating and air conditioning systems.

Clean Outdoor Area around HVAC unit
As you are sprucing up your landscaping this spring, be sure to clear two feet of debris from around your HVAC unit. Remove weeds, plants, leaves, and anything that has accumulated in the surrounding area. You can also rinse the exterior of the HVAC unit with a garden hose to clear away any dirt and debris.

Duct Inspection & Cleaning
Spring is a great time to have a HVAC technician perform an evaluation of your ducts. Leaks in your ducts can waste energy and cost you money. If the ducts in your home do have leaks, you are losing cooled air in unoccupied areas of your home such as the areas between walls, and you may experience discomfort in the temperature of your home. If you suspect your HVAC system isn’t performing up to standard, you will want to contact an HVAC technician who can perform a home energy audit to determine whether you may have leaks in your duct work.

Cleaning your ducts is an important part of regular HVAC maintenance. Dust and debris accumulate in your ductwork over time and it is recommended that you have E Dennis thoroughly clean your ducts once every three to five years.

HVAC Tune-ups
There are many facets of your HVAC system that you may not be aware need tune-ups occasionally. Cleaning evaporator coils, checking refrigerant levels, testing electrical components, and inspecting and cleaning the delicate fins of your HVAC unit are essential to ensuring the optimal performance of your HVAC unit. These tune-ups will extend the life of your HVAC unit and improve the quality of its performance.
