When Should I Replace My Air Conditioning Unit?

Replacing an air conditioning unit can be costly. For this reason, it can be difficult to know when it is time to upgrade to a new unit since you don’t want to do it unnecessarily or too soon. Some homeowners prefer to spend money on routine maintenance and minor repairs over investing in a new air conditioning unit. But at some point, the benefits of a new unit outweigh maintaining the existing unit. For your guidance, here are some signs that it’s time to consider air conditioning replacement.

R 22 Freon Is Required

Manufacturers are making significant changes to air conditioning units. One of those changes is to move away from R 22 freon. The cost of freon is rising, making it expensive to replace this particular type of freon. As R 22 freon is being phased out, it could be harder and harder to get ahold of this substance for your AC unit. If your air conditioner is in need of freon to operate, then it could be a good time to consider upgrading to a newer, more energy efficient model. Not only will it save you in expensive freon costs, but it can also save on energy expenses as newer models are much more efficient. Additionally, it can be harder and harder to obtain R 22 freon, so at some point, a change is inevitable, so why not consider it now?

The Age of the AC Unit

Obviously, older units are more likely to have issues and require repairs. The older your unit, the more repairs it may need to keep your home cool and comfortable. Most AC units will last an average of 15 years. If your is approaching the 15-year mark or older, you may notice decreased efficiency, problems with your home staying cool, or lack of proper air flow. If this is the case, it could be time to consider replacing the unit. Newer models with a SEER, or energy rating, of higher than 13 are going to be more effective at performing and will save you money in the long run.

Maintenance Expenses Add Up

Sometimes, the cost of AC repair just isn’t worth it, especially for older units or units that break down often. The cost of repairs can add up quickly. In this case, the money spent on repairs would be better put towards a new unit, rather than continuing to invest in a unit that constantly breaks down. Additionally, some maintenance costs may be expensive. For instance, replacing a fan motor or repairing a refrigerant leak are some of the more costly AC repairs. If you find yourself in need of one of these repairs on an older unit, investing in a new unit may be the best use of your money. The most important thing to consider is whether or not what you are spending on repairs is worth it. If not, then investing in a new unit is the best bet. You also need to keep in mind that although a new unit is expensive, the energy efficiency savings will add up over time, essentially helping to pay for the AC unit.
